2016 Scholarship recipients


The 506th Association will be able to award four $1,000 scholarships thanks, in part, to the generosity of Gene Overton, Carol Sullivan and John Lally. Gene, Carol and John have agreed to fund named awards within our scholarship program. Gene's award will be The Eugene and Marilyn Overton Scholarship Award, Carol's award will be named The NAVILLUS Foundation Award, while John's will be the Marcia and John Lally Service Award. Our fourth scholarship award is the Currahee Award and is funded by the 506th Association membership along with friends of the Association.

The NAVILLUS Foundation is a family foundation that was headed by Lee and Carol Sullivan. Lee has passed away and Carol has decided to continue funding this scholarship in order to honor Lee and the men who served in his Company. This award is dedicated to Lee Sullivan and the members of B Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry who served in the Republic of Vietnam during 1969 and 1970.

Gene Overton served in C Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry at Fort Campbell and the Republic of Vietnam from 1967 to 1968. Gene is also the co-founder of the 506th Association and he, along with his wife Marilyn, have donated an untold amount of time, energy, and money to further the goals of the Association. This award is dedicated to all who served with C Company from 1967 to 1968.

John Lally who served with A Company, 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry in Vietnam, is currently the Chairman of the Association Board of Directors and Newsletter Editor. The Marcia and John Lally Service Award is to honor all Currahees who have served their nation over the last seven decades.


Coleton Guidry

The 506th Association Scholarship Committee selected Coleton Guidry as the winner of the The Eugene and Marilyn Overton Scholarship Award..

Coleton grew up in DeRidder, Louisiana, where he attended East Beauregard High School. He is an excellent athlete, playing and excelling at high school football, basketball, baseball, track and golf. Throughout his four years playing high school sports Coleton received a number of honors at the local and state level. In addition to sports, Coleton also made his mark in academics and graduated as the valedictorian of his 2016 high school class. He is continuing his education by attending Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with a major in English and a minor in History. After LSU he then plans to attend law school at Vanderbilt University. Becoming a lawyer has always been his life long dream.

Coleton is the grandson of Glen Guidry, who served in Alpha Company, 1-506th Infantry, Vietnam 1970-1971, and the son of Neil and Markayla Guidry.


The following letter is from Coleton:

Dear 506th Scholarship Committee,

I am extremely grateful to have been chosen as one of the 2016 scholarship winners. This scholarship is greatly appreciated in helping me with my dreams of becoming a lawyer. I would like to thank all the men and women who served and are serving in the Armed Forces of The United States for defending this great country we live in. I would like to thank the committee who read through each and every scholarship application, and a special thank you for choosing me as a winner. I can't wait to begin the next chapter in my life.

Coleton Guidry

Sarah Cox

The 506th Association Scholarship Committee selected Sarah Cox of Clarksville, Tennessee as the winner of the $1,000 Marcia and John Lally Service Award.

Sarah is the daughter of CPT Robert Cox, a former Chaplain for the 506th Infantry Regiment.  She attended Rossview High School located in Clarksville, TN for 4 years.  Throughout her high school career Sarah participated and held various leadership roles in organizations such as Junior Civitan International, National Honors Society, Modern Language Club, and Future Business Leaders of America.  She graduated with a Highest Honors Diploma in 2016.  Sarah plans to pursue a dual major in International Business and French with a minor in German through The University of Alabama's Honors College.

Dear 506th Scholarship Committee,

Thank you so much for supporting me as I embark on my college journey. I have huge plans and goals for my future and I greatly appreciate the financial support The 506th Scholarship Committee has given me as I aspire to my goals. I am excitedly anticipating the start of college and ready to start exploring all the opportunities that are made available to me. I hope to continue my pursuit of foreign language acquisition, community service, and leadership in my future. I am honored to be recognized by such an amazing organization and I thank you again for your generosity.

Maxine Langenberg

The 506th Association Scholarship Committee selected Maxine Langenberg of La Habra, California as the winner of the $1,000 NAVILLUS Award for 2016

Maxine Langenberg, born February 27, 1997 to Shane and Shilo Langenberg is a 2015 graduate of La Mirada High School in La Mirada, California. While at La Mirada High School she was a 4 year Varsity letter soccer player, member of the National Honor Society, served as Junior Class President, Senior Class Executive President, crowned Homecoming Queen and maintained a 4.0 or above GPA all 4 years. She has just completed her first year at California State University Bakersfield, in Bakersfield, CA. where she is also a member of the women’s soccer team. After graduating from college, future plans are to attend graduate school to become a physical therapist with an emphasis on sports related injuries. 

Maxine’s grandfather Gene Langenberg a lifetime member of the 101st Airborne Association and the Currahee Association served in Company B 2/506 Infantry, 101st Airborne Division, 1966-1967.


The following letter is from Maxine:

Dear 506th Scholarship Committee,

I am humbled and extremely honored to be selected by the 506th Airborne Infantry Regiment Association as of the 2016 scholarship award winners.

I have worked hard to achieve my short term goals and am dedicated to continuing my education so that my long term goal of becoming a physical therapist will someday be one of my greatest accomplishments.

To be acknowledged by such an extraordinary group falls nothing short of a reminder to always do my best.

I would like to thank the courageous men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country and hope that I too can contribute to making our country a better place!

Maxine Langenberg

Bryan Medema

The 506th Association Scholarship Committee selected Bryan Medema of Roselle, Illinois as the winner of the $1,000 Currahee Award for 2016.

Bryan was born in Chicago, Illinois, and grew up in Roselle, Illinois.  Bryan earned his BA at Indiana University in 2012, and upon graduation, accepted his commission as an Infantry officer in the United States Army.  Bryan was initially stationed at Fort Knox, KY, with 3rd Brigade, 1st Infantry Division and subsequently deployed to Afghanistan as the intelligence officer for a Security Forces Advisory and Assistance Team (SFAAT).  Following the deployment Bryan was reposted at Fort Knox, until his brigade was inactivated and he was sent to Fort Campbell and assigned to 1-506 IN "Red Currahee".  Bryan has spent the past two years with the battalion, working in operations.


Bryan will begin law school this fall at the George Washington University Law School in Washington, D.C.  He plans to study constitutional and policy law with the intent of working in public advocacy for agencies like the V.A. or the Department of Justice.

Dear 506th Scholarship Committee,

Oh behalf of my family and me, thank you for supporting my legal education.  The assistance you've granted will allow me to place a greater focus on my studies, ensuring that I am able to maximize my potential.  My time in the Army - and especially Red Currahee - has left an indelible mark on my character and work ethic, both of which will serve me well as I transition into civilian life.  I look forward to being an ambassador for both veterans and the Currahee nation on campus and in the work force.
